Insurance Ireland exclusively hosts the 8th Insurance Europe International Conference in Dublin on Wednesday, 25th May 2016. The theme of the conference is Serving our Customer in Tomorrow’s World. Over 600 delegates from 50 countries will join the debate on several serious issues facing both the insurance industry and wider society.

150+ of our delegates will be international/domestic industry CEOs.

For this month’s Conference update, we’d like to take some time to begin to introduce you to some of our esteemed speakers from across the globe – to give you a sense of the calibre of the day:


Conference Speakers

Philip Lane
Governor Central Bank of Ireland


Philip Lane is the 11th Governor of the Central Bank of Ireland. Previously he was on the academic staff at Trinity College Dublin and he remains affiliated with the university as Whately Professor of Political Economy (on leave). Prior to joining the Central Bank he also chaired the Advisory Scientific Committee of the European Systemic Risk Board and was Director of the International Macroeconomics and Finance Programme at the Centre for Economic Policy Research (CEPR).

Mike McGavick
CEO XL Group Plc & Chairman of the Geneva Insurance Association


Mike McGavick has been chief executive officer of XL Group plc since 2008. With Mike as CEO, XL has built its premier position as the company its clients and partners look to for solutions to complex risks. In 2014, Mike was named the Insurance Leader of the Year by St. John’s University School of Risk Management. Mike is currently the Chairman of the Geneva Association and is a Director and Immediate Past Chairman of the Association of Bermuda Insurers & Reinsurers. He is on the board of the Global Reinsurance Forum, the American Insurance Association, the Insurance Information Institute and the International Insurance Society

Paul Mahon
President and Chief Executive Officer of Great-West Lifeco Inc. The Great-West Life Assurance Company, London Life Insurance Company, The Canada Life Assurance Company.


Paul Mahon was appointed President and Chief Executive Officer of Great-West Lifeco, Great-West Life, London Life and Canada Life in May 2013. He has been associated with Great-West for nearly 30 years, having joined the company in Winnipeg after earning his Bachelor of Commerce (Honors) degree at the University of Manitoba in 1986. Over the next two decades he held a number of roles with increasing responsibility, with a primary focus on distribution and strategy for the companies in Canada and abroad. Paul served as President and Chief Operating Officer, Canada for five years prior to his appointment as CEO. He is a member of the Canadian Life and Health Insurance Association (CLHIA) Board of Directors. In Winnipeg, he is a Board member of the CancerCare Manitoba Foundation and Misericordia Health Centre Corporation.

Thomas Sullivan
Senior Advisor for Insurance to the Board of Governors, Federal Reserve.


Thomas Sullivan, former Connecticut Insurance Commssioner has become the Senior Advisor for Insurance to the Board of Governors at the Federal Reserve, he will lead oversight of some of the nation’s largest insures and represent the Fed in global discussions about rules for the industry. Previously he was a Principal of Financial Services Regulatory Practice at PricewaterhouseCoopers.

Rowan Douglas
CEO Capital, Science & Policy and Chair Willis Research Network Willis Group

Rowan Douglas is CEO Capital, Science & Policy Practice at Willis Group. Previously, Rowan served on the board of Willis Re as CEO, Global Analytics. He also sits on the Executive Committee of the International Insurance Society, New York. Rowan is also Chairman of the Willis Research Network which brings together around fifty universities and science institutions across the world to confront challenges of resilience, finance and sustainable growth. He serves on the UK Prime Minister's Council for Science & Technology. In 2015, he was elected as founding co-chair of the Insurance Development Forum (IDF). The IDF brings together national and regional Governments, the global re/insurance sector, UN Agencies and other international institutions to enable the development of insurance related capabilities and capacity to support disaster resilience and the wider objectives of the Post-2015 Agenda. The IDF meets on the margins of IMF-World Bank Spring Meetings & the UN General Assembly, with a secretariat provided by the World Bank.

Gabriel Bernardino
Chairman, European Insurance and Occupational Pensions Authority (EIOPA)

Gabriel Bernardino is Chairman of the European Insurance and Occupational Pensions Authority (EIOPA). He is responsible for the strategic direction of EIOPA and represents the Authority at the Council of the European Union, the European Commission and the European Parliament. Prior to his current role, Mr. Bernardino was the Director General of the Directorate for Development and Institutional Relations at the Instituto de Seguros de Portugal (ISP). He has served in several positions of increasing responsibility since he joined the ISP in 1989 and represented EIOPA's preceding organisation, CEIOPS, as Chairman between October 2009 and December 2010.

Craig Thorburn
Senior Actuary – Insurance Market & Regulation, The World Bank


Craig Thorburn is the Insurance Market and Regulation expert at The World Bank, following several years of experience with the Australian Prudential Regulation Authority (APRA) as General Manager in the Diversified Institutions Division. He joined APRA's predecessor, the Insurance and Superannuation Commission as Australian Government Actuary in April 1996 and then moved to life insurance supervision as Deputy Commissioner–Life Insurance in February 1998. Since December 1999, Craig has been chair the International Association of Insurance Supervisors' (IAIS) Sub Committee on Solvency.

David McMillan
Chairman Global Health Insurance and CEO Aviva Europe


David joined Aviva in November 2002 and is CEO, Aviva Europe with accountability for the Group's businesses in Italy, Lithuania, Poland, Spain and Turkey. He is also chairman of Aviva France SA. He joined the Group Executive in April 2012. He was previously chief executive officer, Aviva UK & Ireland General Insurance, chief operating officer for Aviva UK General Insurance, chairman of Aviva Global Services and non-executive director of Aviva Health. Prior to joining Aviva, he spent 12 years as director of management consultancy with PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP. His role involved leading projects spanning mergers and acquisitions, retail banking, organisational strategy and change.

Andrea Keenan
Vice-chair of the Microinsurance Network


The Microinsurance Network is the global multi-stakeholder platform for microinsurance industry and experts to work together on emerging topics. As an economist, Andrea Keenan got involved in microinsurance by participating in international regulatory efforts towards financial inclusion as an advisor and has performed her own research on the business potential of microinsurance and on the contribution of microinsurance to overall economic growth.

Torbjorn Magnusson
Vice-President – Insurance Europe


Torbjorn Magnusson, President and CEO of Sweden's If P&C Insurance, has been elected, for a period of three years, vice-president of Insurance Europe, the European insurance and reinsurance federation. Torbjorn started his career in the insurance industry as an actuary with Skandia International. In his 23 years in the industry he also worked for Mercantile & General Re in London as actuary and chief actuary. He joined P&C Insurance in 1999 as head of commercial products, before becoming head of the company's commercial division. He has been If's president and CEO since 2002.

Valter Trevisani
Board Member – Generali


Valter graduated in Economics with honours at the University of Trieste and began working for the Generali Group in December 1988. From 1988 to 1991 he worked at the Research Dept. of Generali Head Office, where he was in charge of monitoring the developments taking place in the main insurance markets outside Italy, with particular reference to Central and Eastern Europe. From 1991 to 1995 he worked in various U.K. and U.S.A. subsidiaries of the Group in the underwriting area. In January 1996 he came back to Trieste Head Office and was appointed Area Manager within the Group Insurance Operations of the Corporate Centre, in charge of the U.K., the C.E.E. region and Asia. He was in charge of the working team paving the way for Generali Group’s entrance in the Chinese market, soon followed by India. In 1998 he also took the responsibility for the Netherlands, followed by Spain in 1999. In 2002 he was promoted Assistant General Manager. He currently serves on the Board of Directors of several Generali Group companies outside Italy. In 2007 he was appointed Deputy General Manager. Since February 2009 his responsibility has covered all foreign territories of operations of the Generali Group as well as the Life, Non-Life and Reinsurance activities at Group level. He has been a member of the Generali Group Management Committee (GMC) since 2011.

Gordon Watson
Regional Chief Executive, AIA Group


Gordon Watson is the Regional Chief Executive responsible for AIA Group’s operations in Hong Kong, Macau, Australia, Philippines, Vietnam and New Zealand as well as the Group’s Corporate Solutions, Partnership Distribution and AIA Vitality businesses. Gordon has been with AIG/AIA for 30 years in various leadership positions in New York, London, Africa, the Middle East, Japan, Korea and Hong Kong. Prior to rejoining AIA Group in January 2011, he was Global Vice Chairman and Regional CEO of ALICO Japan and Asia. In addition to overseeing the Japan operation – ALICO’s largest region – Gordon also had responsibility for global marketing, distribution, strategy and corporate solutions across 54 countries. Prior to this role, he was ALICO’s Global Chief Operating Officer. Gordon played a key role in the completion of the sale of ALICO to MetLife. Before joining ALICO, Gordon was Deputy President of AIA with responsibilities for Hong Kong, Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia and Vietnam. Prior to this role, he was President and CEO of AIG Life Korea. Under his leadership, AIG Korea delivered strong results with market share surpassing a number of foreign insurers.
